ARTIST STATEMENT

Our objective always has been, and continues to be, providing programming that promotes the development of independent imagination, self-motivated affirmation, the interrogation of existing ideas to construct new ones, and, ultimately, to provide a season of programming that inspires youth to believe that they are the wonderfully necessary catalyst for change in their own lives, and the world.
— Khari Shelton, Artistic Director of Purple Crayon Players, 2015

As a theatre artist, educator, and activist, I am constantly working to push the boundaries of theatre for young audiences, to explore new developments in the field, and to create respectful, engaging, socially relevant, and inspiring theatre for all audiences. I am passionate about theatre for young people that sparks meaningful and lasting discussion, engages its audiences by asking real, compelling questions, and challenges misconceptions of what young people are capable of by treating youth audiences with respect and dignity.
